The Plzeň force was still locked in attrition with the enemy as it fought its way back across Germany. At 03:08 Flight Lieutenant Pexton, flying Halifax DT489 of 35 P.F.F. Squadron, was hit by flak at 12,500 feet, north of Mannheim. A petrol tank was hit and the Gee navigation system put out of action along with the wireless transmitter. An ammunition track to one of the turrets was also damaged.

Also on the return journey near Mannheim, Flying Officer Howgill and crew, in Lancaster ED705 of 100 squadron, saw huge fires, shot up a goods train and were engaged twice by flak positions which the gunners silenced.

At 03:12 another Halifax (DT561 51 Squadron) was brought down at Hadamar, Limburg with the loss of all the crew. She was the victim of a night fighter at 3,600 metres altitude flown by Lt. Otto Blohm 10./NJG4. He had claimed his first victory. The Halifax pilot, Sergeant Ernie Cox, was one of five brothers. Two of these besides Ernie were also aircrew. Steve Cox served in Coastal Command and earned the D.F.C. D.F.M. and M.I.D., John served as a navigator on Ferry Command in the Middle East. Steve and John ended the war as Flight-Lieutenant and Squadron Leader respectively. Ernie’s brother Kenneth wrote in 2007:
